World of Darkness: Chicago
A Breakdown of the Contents of this Massive World of Darkness Setting Book
Posted: 2006-01-09

World of Darkness: Chicago is a massive guide to the history, geography and politics of the Windy City, twisted to suit th emysterious World of Darkness. This 424 page book contains a huge collection of new game material, including dozens of complex and surprising characters, new threats to face and three complete stories to play. It also includes numerous ways for characters from any Worldo of Darkness game to interact and collide. This book is a fully compatible supplement for Vampire: The Requiem, Werewolf: The Forsaken and Mage: The Awakening.

World of Darkness: Chicago covers a lot of ground, introduces a lot of new characters (and a few that might be familiar) and provides a glimpse of the city's darkest secrets.

First, you'll find the Prologue, which is a short piece of introductory fiction designed to get you into the right mood. Following that, there is an Introduction chapter, laying out the structure of the entire book in sweeping terms, offering insight into the theme and mood of the Chicago of the World of Darkness, and suggesting further resources to expand your enjoyment of the city.

Next, take a look at Blood and Fire: The History of Chicago in the World of Darkness. Why do they call it the Loop? What started the Great Chicago Fire? What are some noteworthy neighborhoods that might serve as the settings for your stories? This chapter is a primer of the city's history and geography presented through the dark lens of the World of Darkness.

After that, each of the game lines, Vampire: The Requiem, Werewolf: The Forsaken and Mage: The Awakening, makes its mark with three chapters - each - about the Second City.

Vampire: State of the Union is an overview of the city from the perspective of its Kindred. This lays the groundowrk for the complex personal relationships and conflicts that define the city's vampire society.

Vampire: Chicago's Damned is an ensemble cast of the Kindred of Chicago. From the highest seats of power to the lowest gutters sticky with blood, Chicago is filled with surprising and varied characters.

Vampire: Hell Calling presents a story designed to show the Kindred of Chicago in action. What better way to see what goes on in a city than to take part in the action? A major offensive by the unhinged vampires of Belial's Brood catalyzes something much larger, potentially destabilizing all of Kindred society in Chicago.

Werewolf: The Jungle might also be called Hunting Grounds: Chicago, for it presents the Shadow of Chicago, where humans are on edge, the spirits are restless and the Uratha are a powder keg just waiting for a match.

Werewolf: Wolves of the City is an ensemble cast of the werewolves who have carved out a niche in the Windy City. They might serve as potential rivals for your werewolf characters, or leaders to provide inspiration. But Chicago also has a long, dark history, full of death and upheaval. The alphas of the Uratha have a chance to lead the way to renewal and a sense of hope.

Werewolf: Fires in the Winter is a story of a season that ends up as one for the record books, in terms of snowfall and falling temperatures. To many Uratha, the snow and cold is more a nuisance than anything, and they knew that the winter will pass with the city unchanged. They are wrong. Someone, or something, is setting fires, and every fire leaves behind a Wound in the spiritual shadow of the city.

Mage: Second Age of the Second City is a deep look at the noteworthy places and events from Chicago's magical history and modern day. Here the winds of change scour the community of mages who call this metropolis their home.

Mage: Mages of the Second City is an ensemble cast of mage characters currently residing and working in Chicago. Beware. A mage who ends up on the wrong side may find that Chicago is not quite as big a city as it seems.

Mage: Unreal City presents the third story in World of Darkness: Chicago. These stories may all be part of one colossal (and city-shaking) chronicle, or they can each be played through alone.

Following this, there is an Appendix containing detailed social charts, displaying the political and personal relationships between important characters, and their hierarchies of power. Given the scope of this massive book, the detailed Index helps you quickly find passages you need during game play.
